A little girl called for help and said she heard strange noises under her bed

Under the bed, a pair of green eyes glimmered in the dark. The officer jumped and instinctively reached for his gun. The girl clung to her mother, trembling.

“Don’t shoot!” the sergeant shouted. “It could be an animal!”

He knelt down again and turned on his flashlight. The light illuminated a dirty face with deep scratches. It was a little boy, no older than seven, with torn clothes and bare feet.

“Holy God…” the policeman murmured. “It’s a child!”

They carefully pulled him out from under the bed. The child was shaking, holding his hands to his chest, and seemed to not understand where he was. When he looked up, his eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t take me back… please…”

Mia looked at him in amazement.
“Were you the one who was talking?”
“Yes… I was hungry… and cold…”

The girl’s mother brought her hand to her mouth.
“But… who are you, dear?”

The police realized that the situation was more serious than it seemed. They began to ask gentle questions, but the child struggled to respond. He seemed exhausted and scared.

“My name is Andrei,” he finally said. “I ran away… from there…”

“From where, Andrei?” the sergeant asked, kneeling beside him.

The boy was silent. Tears streamed down his cheeks. He pointed towards the window.
“From that old house across the street…”

Everyone looked in the indicated direction. Through the window of the room, a deserted house could be seen, with a collapsed roof and broken windows. A house that people in the neighborhood had avoided for years.

“Tell us what happened there,” the sergeant said in a warm voice.

“They kept me locked up… some bad people… I escaped through the window… and hid here. I heard the girl laughing in the room and wanted to ask for help, but… I didn’t know how…”

Mia’s mother burst into tears.
“My God, this child has been through hell…”

The police immediately called for reinforcements. Within minutes, cars with flashing lights illuminated the entire street. The abandoned house was surrounded. Inside, they discovered an improvised basement, with chains, food scraps, and signs that someone else had been there.

Andrei was taken to the hospital, and Mia did not leave his side. She held his small hand in her palm and whispered:
“You are safe now.”

A few days later, it was revealed that the boy had been missing for months. His family, from a neighboring village, was desperately searching for him. When they came to take him home, the entire street came out.

Mia ran to the gate and offered him her teddy bear.
“Hold it. When you feel scared, remember that you are not alone.”

Andrei smiled for the first time.
“Thank you, Mia.”

The police watched the scene in silence. The sergeant, the same one who had looked under the bed first, took off his cap and said softly:
“Sometimes, the bravest souls are the smallest.”

Since then, Mia no longer had nightmares. And her mother, every time she passed by the crib with the pink blanket, would cross herself and whisper:
“I’m glad I listened to you, my little girl…”

The story of Mia and Andrei remained on the lips of the neighbors for a long time — a reminder of how a small voice, heard in time, could save a life.
