Approximately 100 people were injured in a collision between two high-speed trains in southeastern Slovakia, announced Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, as reported by the TASR agency.
Authorities stated that no fatalities have been reported, but at least two individuals are in critical condition. Emergency response teams were immediately mobilized to the accident site, and Health Minister Kamil Sasko announced that he is personally heading to the area. The impact occurred near the town of Jablonov nad Turnou, in the Kosice region, close to the border with Hungary. According to preliminary information, one of the train drivers failed to give way to the other train.
Authorities are investigating the exact causes of the collision, and rail traffic in the area has been temporarily halted for rescue operations and damage assessment.
The country’s emergency medical services reported that 16 people sustained moderate to severe injuries, and at least 50 were lightly injured.
Images captured by the police and posted on social media showed twisted debris, a locomotive, and a carriage that had derailed and lay on the slope of a hill following the accident, which occurred shortly after 10:00 AM (08:00 GMT).
According to the police, there were approximately 80 passengers on the trains.
The Slovak Railways stated that the two trains collided at a point where the tracks intersect and merge into a single line, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
