The aerial part of the plant, including the stem, leaves, and flowers, is used from greater celandine. It blooms from April to September and should only be harvested on sunny days. In rainy weather, greater celandine darkens, and its active effects are lost. In natural medicine, it can be used in the form of powder, tincture, infusion, and poultice.
To obtain greater celandine powder, the dried stems are ground. The powder is stored in airtight glass containers, kept in cool places, for no more than three weeks.
To prepare greater celandine tincture, you need a jar with a lid, about 15 tablespoons of powder, and 400 ml of 60% food-grade alcohol. Mix all the ingredients, seal the jar tightly, and let it macerate for 14 days, after which it is filtered. It should be stored in the dark for a maximum of one year, as it loses its properties after this period.
The infusion of greater celandine is prepared as follows: put 4 tablespoons of dried and crushed plant in 500 ml of water and let it steep for eight hours, then filter it. The remaining plant after straining is boiled for another five minutes in 500 ml of water, then allowed to cool and strained again. Mix the water from the first filtration with the boiled and cooled liquid from the second to obtain approximately 1 liter of infusion, which is especially used for external treatments.
For poultices with greater celandine, let a few crushed leaves sit in a bowl of warm water for two hours, then apply them to the affected area. Cover the poultice with a gauze and let it act for one hour.
Greater celandine is recommended in natural therapy for liver conditions, in the healing process of certain skin diseases, warts, in cases of jaundice, constipation, rheumatism, etc.
Digestive spasms are effectively combated with greater celandine tincture, taking 3-4 tablespoons per day. The treatment is symptomatic, taken whenever spasms occur, as certain substances contained in this plant (alkaloids) relax the smooth muscles of the digestive tract.
A group of Romanian researchers, led by Dr. Hricu, demonstrated the exceptional effects of greater celandine in combating bile disorders, including dyskinesia. The powder is administered, taking a pinch three times a day, at 8 AM, 1 PM, and 7 PM. This treatment lasts for 30 days, followed by a 10-day break, after which it can be resumed. It has an effectiveness that is hard to match by any synthetic medication. The treatment is also very effective for preventing gallstones.
According to research by German doctor J.C. Bauman, there is no more effective medication than greater celandine in treating digestive issues. Half a teaspoon of greater celandine tincture, taken four times a day, reduces nausea, strongly stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile, and alleviates discomfort and heaviness in the stomach that occurs in cases of indigestion. Each dose of greater celandine is taken 10 minutes before meals. The treatment lasts for three weeks.
Biliary migraine and general migraine can be treated with a heaping teaspoon of greater celandine powder on an empty stomach, in a single dose, for 24 hours. The effects are truly spectacular: in less than an hour, bile is drained, headaches and nausea disappear, as well as excessive sensitivity to noise, light, and smells. The treatment is done occasionally, when headaches and other specific migraine symptoms occur.
Liver diseases have long been known in folk medicine, and this has been scientifically confirmed: greater celandine is an extraordinary stimulant of liver function. It is administered in powder form, taking a pinch four times a day, in courses of 21 days, with 7-10 days of breaks. It is an excellent remedy for individuals with liver conditions resulting from intoxications, poisonings, and infections with the hepatitis virus.
Oral and genital herpes are effectively combated, both internally and externally, with the help of greater celandine tincture. Internally, take one tablespoon of tincture three times a day, in courses of 12 days. For external use, combine greater celandine tincture in equal proportions with propolis tincture, and apply by dripping (not by dabbing with cotton) on the affected area, 4-6 times a day. The effects are rapid and lasting.
Greater celandine is on the verge of causing a strong dispute among specialists regarding the treatment of cancer. Researchers from the former Soviet space have studied the effects of greater celandine on cancer for several decades and have even created a semi-synthetic medication derived from it: Ukrain. Their research shows that the juice of greater celandine applied to areas affected by skin cancer, as well as on external tumors, works wonders, while the powder administered internally improves the condition of cancer patients. A quarter of a teaspoon of greater celandine powder is taken four times a day, in courses of two months, with three weeks of breaks. It helps destroy malignant cells. According to Russian and Ukrainian researchers, the active substances in greater celandine are effective in pancreatic, ovarian, pharyngeal, rectal, colon, stomach, and liver cancers.
French phytotherapist Maurice Messegue effectively treated viral hepatitis in a less common way: with foot baths combined with greater celandine infusion. Every evening, foot baths are made with hot water, into which 1-2 liters of greater celandine infusion are added. Each limb is kept in the bath for 15 minutes, then gently patted dry with a towel (do not rinse or wipe). It is a gentle and effective treatment, through which the active substances of the plant are absorbed by the peripheral blood circulation and transported to the liver, where they exert their therapeutic action.
