There are moments in life that are so strange, emotional, or surprising that they seem straight out of a movie. This post includes 14 true stories submitted by people — they are short, intense, and unforgettable. Each of them could leave you wanting more, from unexpected twists to moments that make you stop and reflect.

Story 1:
I found out from my mother’s friend’s brother that my father has a secret family. Apparently, he cheated on my mom multiple times with different women years ago, and now he has a completely new family that I have never met. None of us were supposed to know about this. I have six siblings (there are seven of us in total) and apparently, I have other unknown siblings as well.

I don’t know if I’ve ever passed them on the street, at work, or if I should do background checks on any romantic partner… in case they could be my brother or sister… so, yeah, thanks, Dad.

Story 2:
My parents divorced 35 years ago after being together for only 3 years. I went through a lot, caught between their arguments and disputes. I am 36 now and still have issues with them, especially with my mom.

It seems they continued to see each other for about 15 years after the divorce. Selfish people. But it’s my fault for not cutting ties with them.

Story 4:
My father recently told me that he wasn’t actually fired from his job. He simply stopped going to work because the father of his ex was working the same shift as him. Instead of asking for a transfer or talking to a superior, he completely stopped showing up.

We lost our house around 2005 or 2007 — I was 10 or 11 at the time — and he told me he had been fired. I only found out the truth recently. Now I’m 28 and I’ve lost almost all respect for him after learning this.

Story 5:
My maternal grandmother was married to a widower who had four children from a previous marriage. She made him give up his children before they got married. She probably didn’t want to take care of someone else’s kids.

She got pregnant with my mother, and when my mother was about five years old, her parents (my grandparents) divorced. He couldn’t stand living with my heartless grandmother anymore. My mother didn’t tell me this — I found out by chance that I have four uncles.

Story 7:
My brother had an affair with the mother of one of my friends. She used to drive him to work when he was 18. It lasted over six months. She became obsessed with him, and he blocked her on all social media and phone, basically went into hiding.

Her husband is a big and intimidating guy, and her son is my lifelong friend. Neither of them knows. My brother only told me because it seems she hasn’t told anyone. It’s pretty strange to carry such a burden in your heart.

Story 8:
It is said that my grandmother had an affair with her sister’s husband and got pregnant. She gave birth to the child, left it with a relative, and a few weeks later, the child died.

I will never know what really happened. When she was still alive, I asked her directly. She didn’t give me a clear answer — she avoided the subject. However, it would make sense, considering that she and her sister had a very tense relationship. I was told this by their brother, who suffers from schizophrenia, so who knows what the truth is.

Story 10:
I always knew I was adopted when I was a baby. At 26, I received an anonymous letter in the mail, which contained my original birth certificate and a ticket from my sister’s funeral. I knew her as my cousin.

It turns out my uncle was the one who adopted me. My “aunt” is actually my grandmother, and my mother is my “cousin.” When I was little, I often visited what I thought were my grandparents, about four hours away. My biological parents lived near their house — which means I saw them often and played with my biological brother and sister, but I had no idea at the time.

Story 11:
My grandmother had a child that no one knew about. In her last years, she kept asking for the child. After she died, I found a single picture of a baby that wasn’t from our family. Then, my uncle told us that she had left for an entire summer when she was a young adult, and that’s when we started to piece things together… Her parents were very strict, and we suspect she had no choice.

Story 13:
When my grandmother died, she left me a rental property (three houses) in her will, naming my dad as the guardian until I turned 18. I only found out years after I turned 18 because my dad never told me. While going through some old papers, I discovered the will and found out that he had already sold one of the houses long ago, as if it were his own.

He also made credit cards in my name when I was a child, so I already had ruined credit before I became an adult.

Story 14:
My husband, 42, died unexpectedly a month ago. Yesterday, his phone made a sound. It was a payment notification on his card. A hotel reservation had been made just minutes before. I jumped in the car and drove to that address. On the way, a message popped up: “I’m already at the hotel, waiting for you.”

I started to sweat; my hands were shaking on the wheel. Then, the phone rang. A woman’s voice said, “Where are you, love? I’ve been waiting for you for an hour!” I yelled, asking who she was. She sounded confused and asked, “Isn’t this Jake’s phone?”

But my husband’s name wasn’t Jake. It was Daniel…

It turns out Jake was a 23-year-old who had broken into my husband’s phone and stolen all his personal information — including the card. I contacted the authorities, who handled everything.

But for a moment, I allowed myself to believe the impossible. That maybe, somehow… my husband was still alive.
