In court, my ex-husband said: “My son wants to live with me.”

The voice that echoed through the speakers was not that of a loving father at all.

— If you say anything more about your mother, I swear I won’t take you even on weekends! You’re a liar, just like her! I’m fed up! Don’t forget who buys you your phones and games! You want to stay with her? Fine! Let’s see how it is to have nothing!

Nervous footsteps were heard, followed by a thud — maybe a fist on a table. The recording ended with the child’s breath being cut short.

The room fell silent. No one moved.

The judge took off his glasses, placed them on the table, and looked long at Damian.
— Mr. Carter… you lied to the court, you threatened a minor, and you demonstrated a complete lack of self-control. Your custody request is denied.

Then, his gaze turned to me.
— Ma’am, your son is brave. If you ever decide to file a complaint for emotional abuse, you have the court’s support.

Tears filled my eyes, but I held strong. Zaden returned to his seat and smiled at me.

On the way out, a local journalist, who happened to be in the room, approached us. He had heard everything. The story was set to appear in the regional press as an example of courage and truth spoken through the voice of a child.

In the following days, neighbors knocked on our door with pies and jars of jam, as is customary in Romania when you don’t know what to say but want to be there for someone.

For the first time in years, I felt that I was not alone.

And Zaden… Zaden was no longer just my little boy. He was a boy who, at eight years old, had learned something that many adults never learn:

That the truth, spoken with a trembling voice, can be stronger than a lie spoken in a suit.

And from that day on, we were never afraid again.
