MY DEAR GRANDMOTHER LEFT ME A PHOTO OF US

Beneath the thin protective cardboard was carefully glued a sealed envelope, slightly yellowed with time, but intact. On it, written with her blue fountain pen that she used to leave me notes for school, was a single word: “Trust.”

I opened it with trembling hands. Inside, there was a letter and a key. The handwriting was familiar, with large round letters, like in the notebooks from first grade.

“My dear Tomiță,

If you are reading this, it means I have left. But I want you to know that my love for you never leaves. I have left you what cannot be stolen: trust, lessons, and this photograph of us smiling together, because our love never needed things.

But I left something more. The key you hold in your hand opens the deposit box at Banca Transilvania, the central branch. There is your future. Trust yourself. And never forget: everything valuable is not seen at first glance.

I will always love you,
Grandma.”

The next day, I went to the bank, feeling like a child about to learn a closely guarded secret. The clerk asked for my ID and the key. Then, she brought me a metal box.

When I opened it, I was breathless.

Inside was a large envelope, full of documents. They were property deeds. Not just for an apartment in the city center, but also for a plot of land near Brașov, and several bank deposits. On each document, it read: “Owner: Tom Ionescu.”

On a separate sheet, it said: “For when you are ready to build your dream.”

I cried there, quietly, like a child. Not for the money. But for the wisdom, love, and loyalty that my grandmother had kept for me until the last moment. She knew that if she had transferred everything to my name from the start, my mother and sister would have tried to take away my last hope.

Instead, she offered me a lesson. That patience and trust are rewarded. That you don’t have to fight for what is rightfully yours—when it comes from true love, it will find its way to you.

Today, I sit in that house on the third floor, with the photo from the zoo framed in the middle of the living room wall. I look at it every morning and say in my mind: “Thank you, Grandma. I understand everything.”

And I know for sure that, from somewhere above, she is smiling. Just like in our photo.
