The Husband Spent a Week on the Coast with an “Acquaintance”

When he finally climbed the stairs and put the key in the lock, the door opened from the inside. Marina stood in the doorway, with a cold but surprisingly calm expression.

– You’re back, she said simply.

Andrei tried a forced smile, but her penetrating gaze cut through him like a knife. In the living room, the light was on, and something unexpected awaited him on the table: a thick folder filled with papers and photographs.

– What is this? he murmured, feeling the blood drain from his face.

– The truth, Andrei, Marina replied. I’m tired of playing pretend.

She sat down on the couch and opened the folder. The photographs showed him and Vica at the beach, at a restaurant, embracing, smiling. There was no room for excuses or explanations.

Andrei brought his hands to his temples. – Who gave you these?

– An old friend, Marina said, with an almost sad air. You know, in my grandparents’ village, they say that the truth rises to the surface like oil on water. That’s how it was this time.

A heavy silence fell between them. Marina stood up, took off her wedding ring, and placed it on the table.

– I’m done. From now on, our paths diverge.

Andrei felt his soul collapsing. All the plans, promises, even the feeling of freedom he thought he had with Vica, now seemed empty, meaningless.

Marina continued: – I’ll leave you the apartment. I have somewhere to go. To my parents, to the countryside. Maybe the peace there will heal my heart. You know how it is in the village, the rooster crows in the morning, neighbors greet each other with “God help,” and time flows differently. There, people know how to forgive, but I can’t anymore.

Tears shone in her eyes, but her voice remained firm.

Andrei fell to his knees. – Marina, please…

But she just shook her head. – It’s not just about me, Andrei. You need to find your own way too.

The next day, Marina took a few things and left. In her wake, the house felt emptier than ever.

Andrei was left alone, looking at the family photo on the nightstand, the same one Marina had looked at before she let him go. Now he understood: it wasn’t his betrayal that hurt the most, but the loss of the woman who had always been by his side.

In that oppressive silence, for the first time in a long time, he heard his own soul. And he realized that sometimes, the hardest punishment isn’t loneliness, but the realization too late of what you have lost.
