Where Should I Go with My Child?

Life seemed, at last, to take on new colors. That’s exactly how Sofia imagined it back when she lived in the orphanage.

Sofia had never known her parents. That’s why she always prayed to God to send her a good husband who could replace her entire family. And that man was Mihai. In her marriage to him, Sofia was truly happy. And in just a month, they were to become three. Mihai deeply desired a son. At first, the young couple lived in a rented apartment, then Mihai’s parents helped them buy their own two-bedroom apartment.

Before the arrival of the child, Mihai and Sofia managed to finish the renovations and set up a room for the baby. Sofia was over the moon. She had already bought the first clothes for the child.

One morning, Sofia felt contractions. Mihai rushed her to the hospital and even attended the birth. He was the first to hold their son, Denis, in his arms.

The birth went well; mother and child were resting. Mihai went home to pack the things and food that his wife had asked for. From that moment on, Sofia never saw her husband again.

A head-on collision on a wet road after a rain. The other driver was at fault. Mihai could not be saved. Thus, Sofia was left alone with a newborn in her arms. It was terrible in every way – morally, financially, and emotionally.

Mihai was returning to the hospital when, coming from the opposite direction, another car sped straight into him. That was the last image Mihai saw in his life. They didn’t tell his wife right away, even though she was eagerly waiting for him. They told her he had gone on an urgent business trip.

When she returned home from the hospital, nothing made her happy anymore. She was left alone with a small child. Fortunately, she and Mihai had set aside some money “for rainy days.” With that, Sofia lived… She didn’t want to live anymore, but she had to stay strong for her son… Mihai’s parents had come to see their grandson only twice. Sofia understood their pain…

Until one day, when they came to her and told her that the apartment belonged to them and that she had to move out within a week. Sofia burst into tears; she didn’t know what to do. They even threatened to sue her.

— It has only been 40 days since Mihai left us, and you already want the apartment? Where should I go with the child? Where have your feelings as grandparents gone?

She had no one to talk to. Sofia felt Mihai’s absence deeply. His parents were stubborn and remained firm in their position. They wanted the apartment, and the fact that their grandson lived there didn’t matter to them. They threatened her with a lawsuit or demanded that she pay the full value of the apartment.

What should Sofia do?
