Milk thistle (Cirsium arvense), commonly known as wild thistle, is a plant often overlooked in the spontaneous flora of Romania, but it has impressive medicinal properties. Its leaves, flowers, and roots contain active compounds that support liver detoxification and skin purification.
Important Chemical Composition
Milk thistle contains:
- Flavonoids (luteolin, apigenin) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles
- Cynarin and silymarin liver protectors, also found in milk thistle
- Tannins and phenolic acids with detoxifying and astringent effects
- Vitamins C, K, and beta-carotene involved in skin regeneration and immune modulation
- Fibers and sesquiterpene lactones with diuretic and purifying effects

Preparation Method:

Benefits of Milk Thistle Tea
1. Deep Hepatic Detoxification
The main active compounds in milk thistle stimulate bile production and the regeneration of liver cells. Its action is comparable to that of artichoke but milder:
- helps eliminate accumulated toxins in the liver,
- promotes liver regeneration in cases of unbalanced diet,
- acts as an adjunct in hepatic steatosis and biliary dyskinesia.
A study published in Journal of Natural Medicines (2017) showed that flavonoids from milk thistle reduce hepatic oxidative stress in rodents subjected to a toxic diet.
2. Skin Purification from Within
Milk thistle acts indirectly on the skin by detoxifying the liver and reducing inflammation. Observed results include:
- reduction of blemishes and acne,
- soothing of eczema and recurrent irritations,
- decrease in seborrhea tendency.
It is frequently used by herbalists in treatments for reactive skin or in cases of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
3. Natural Diuretic, Mild Laxative
The tea stimulates the elimination of excess water and toxins through urine without causing electrolyte imbalance. Useful in:
- gentle weight loss regimens,
- water retention,
- elimination of uric acid (in cases of mild gout).
4. Support for the Immune System
Due to its content of vitamins C, K, and natural antioxidants, milk thistle tea supports:
- natural anti-inflammatory response,
- recovery of the body after infections,
- maintenance of a balance between internal healing and defense functions.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding – there are not enough studies regarding safety.
- Allergies to plants in the Asteraceae (Compositae) family – may cause reactions.
- Individuals with biliary lithiasis – may experience colic if bile is stimulated abruptly.
- Children under 12 years – administration should only be done on medical advice.
