STRUGGLING MOTHER WITH 4 CHILDREN BUYS AN OLD CAR

A single mother with four young children decided to buy a second-hand car to be able to go to work. The former owner of the car asked her to open the trunk when she got home. What she found there changed her life.

Laura was left alone to raise her four children after her husband, Paul, left when he found out she was pregnant with their fourth child. “Another mouth to feed? No way! I’m done!” he said one day, leaving their trailer and asking for a divorce.

Laura was devastated. The pregnancy had not been planned, but she expected to have Ion’s support during such a difficult time, especially since they were already facing financial problems.

After their separation, Paul stopped giving her money for the children, claiming he had no job and that no one would hire him because he hadn’t finished college.

Shortly after giving birth, Laura had no choice but to look for a job, as the money for food, diapers, and milk was running out. Jennifer went from restaurant to restaurant and store to store, only to be turned away by owners because of her four small children.

“It’s difficult to hire mothers with small children because something always comes up. Either the child is sick, or you have no one to leave them with, so you have to miss work. I’m sorry, it’s too much for us,” an employer told her.

Since no one in their neighborhood would hire her, Jennifer began looking in the nearby city. With the little money she had left, she took a taxi and asked her neighbors to take care of her children for the afternoon.

When she arrived at the hotel, Laura saw a job offer for housekeeping. She went in, applied, and was hired on the spot. “We urgently need staff here, especially with summer coming. We will be fully booked in a few weeks,” the HR manager told her.

Desperate to find a job, Laura accepted, even though it meant commuting daily to another city. She thanked the manager and went home, where she told her children that she had finally managed to find a job.

After spending almost 100 lei on the taxi, Laura realized she couldn’t afford to commute daily. It would have been better to have her own car, but she didn’t have the money for one. She realized that the best solution would be to buy a second-hand car.

Laura found a car but wondered if the owner would be willing to sell it for a lower price. “Do you think you could sell me this car for 5,000 lei? You see, I’m a single mother with four children, and it’s been hard for me to earn money. I was hoping to get this car to accept a job in the nearby city,” she confessed.

When the owner learned that Laura was raising her four small children alone, he agreed to sell her the car for 5,000 lei. “If you can buy the car by tomorrow, I’ll give it to you for 5,000 lei,” he told her.

Laura couldn’t be more grateful to the owner for agreeing to sell it at a lower price. She gathered her courage and applied for a loan at the bank, hoping to get the money needed to buy the car the next day. Unfortunately, due to her poor credit score, the loan was immediately denied.

As her options began to dwindle, Laura thought deeply about what she could do next. She couldn’t move to another city because her oldest son, Andrei, had just started school near the trailer park where they lived.

Rent in the nearby city was also much more expensive, and she couldn’t take the trailer with her. She really needed a car to get to work and to take her children to school and kindergarten.

Then, she remembered the family heirloom her mother had left her – a gold chain that had been in their family for generations. Tears welled up at the thought of selling it to buy a car, but she desperately needed it to support her children in the long run.

Laura took the gold chain from her jewelry box and went to a nearby pawn shop. “I’m sorry, Mom. I really have to do this now,” she said aloud.

When she arrived at the pawn shop, the chain was valued at 5,500 lei. Laura was thrilled. The amount was enough to buy the car, and she would still have some left for daily needs.

The next day, she returned to the second-hand car dealer and handed the owner an envelope with 5,000 lei. “Thank you for agreeing to sell it to me, sir. You have no idea how much this will help me and my children,” she said, handing the envelope to the man.

The owner, who introduced himself as Jeff, smiled. “Congratulations on the car. You made an excellent purchase,” he told her.

As Laura signed the purchase papers, Ion discreetly slipped something into the trunk of the car, and when Laura was getting ready to leave, he called out to her.

“By the way, check the trunk when you get home. I left something for your children inside,” he said, waving as Jennifer left.

Since buying the car, Laura had been busy commuting to work and taking her children to school and kindergarten, so she completely forgot to check the trunk until she found a note in the car’s glove compartment.

“I hope you and your children enjoyed the gift I left in the trunk. May it be of great help to you.” Surprised, she decided to open the trunk to look for the gift.

At first, Laura was confused when she saw only a white envelope in one corner of the trunk. Then she realized it was the same white envelope she had used to put the payment for the car. She opened it and saw that the 5,000 LEI was untouched.

Laura couldn’t help but cry at that moment, surprised by the man’s kind gesture. She drove straight to the second-hand car dealer after work, where she thanked Ion for his generosity.

“The world throws challenges at you, and it’s up to you whether you rise to meet those challenges or give in to them. I’m proud of you for staying strong for your children, and I thought you needed the money more than I do. Just don’t forget to pay this kindness forward when you can,” Ion told her.
